ToWR: Small Group Communications Class, 17 Sept 2016

TOWR_LOGO_V2

The Order of the White Rose will hold a Small Group Communications Class in north Seattle on September 17th.

We held a comms class in November and it was a huge success. There are also ham license classes everywhere. But what about those who want to understand some of how it all works and aren’t ready to take the test? Or those who already have their license and are thinking “now what?”  What about those who want specific, focused training on small group communications and the practical how-to of it all? That’s what our Small Group Communications class is for.

Our class, taught by TOWR members and radio operators Steve and Mike, will focus on the following:

  • Basic Radio Theory
  • Getting Started: what to buy and why
  • How to Set Up a Listening Post and Start Collecting
  • Setting Up Comms for Your Group

You don’t need a license to take this class; although this is NOT a Tech or General ham radio class, we’ll cover some of the same topics. If you have a license already, great–you’ll still learn.  This class is focused on the practical familiarization and use of radios, and will get you more comfortable taking the exam, buying new gear, or using the gear you already have.

The class fee is $50, and you can reserve a spot or get payment information by contacting us here. You’ll want to bring your comms gear, if you have any.

Date: 17 September 2016
Time: 1015-1645
Location: Kingsgate Library, North Seattle

Reserve your spot now!

NW APRS Summer Gathering, North Bend, Sept. 9-11th

nwaprslogo

The 2016 / 19th annual Northwest APRS Summer Gathering (NWAPRSSG) is ON!

Dates are:

  • Friday, September 9th, 2016 (Setup, no formal presentations, show and tell)
  • Saturday, September 10, 2016 (Formal presentations, evening movie)
  • Sunday, September 11, 2016 (Morning – debrief)

at Valley Camp near North Bend, WA.

The Summer Gathering is great fun and a great opportunity to learn and practice just about anything you can do with a computer and your ham radio particularly focused on the Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS)

The location is a beautiful camp with hot showers and a bunkhouse, tent camping or RV opportunities. Many folks arrive on Thursday or Friday for socializing. The presentations are on Saturday. Contact Teena (K9HAV)with your request for overnight accommodation.

The event runs on donations. We are hoping the day folks will help with $15 or $20 or more for the day (if you enjoyed the free breakfast, maybe add what that would cost in a restaurant) and $25 per night for overnight stays – there is a donation box at the event. If you donated what you would pay for your breakfast and other tasty meals, we would probably be in great shape. Please help us keep this event going for another 18 years! This venue is made available to us at no charge but it cannot continue to happen without your participation and support.

Bring your thirst for knowledge, some warm clothing for the evenings, a chair and something soft to enhance your enjoyment of the picnic-table seats and some food and drink to eat and share. Steaks and burgers are most frequently consumed. There are grills going for lunch and dinner and coffee early each day…

There is now a form online to “register” to attend the 2016 Summer Gathering. Register is in quotes because, as always, all are welcome at the Summer Gathering, but it really helps the organizers to have an idea of how many are planning to attend, and some other basic info for planning purposes.

The Northwest APRS Summer Gathering has evolved to encompass more than just APRS over the past few years, and sometimes it helps when planning an event to develop a theme. There’s a lot that has been going on in 2016 relating to digital / data communications in Amateur Radio. One that comes immediately to my mind are the incredible, and rapidly evolving capabilities of the “SDR receiver dongles” (there are many names – that’s just a generic description). For under $100 – the price of the receiver dongle and a Raspberry Pi, you can have an incredible receiver dedicated to a single purpose, such as monitoring aircraft transponders and plotting them on a map.

Another advancement is the Raspberry Pi 3… what would be considered a supercomputer 20 years ago (literally – compare the MIPS available of a Raspberry Pi versus a Cray supercomputer of 20 years ago) and you have an amazing computer that you can afford to dedicate to a specific Amateur Radio task, such as monitoring one specific repeater, a packet radio system that can operate in a window of your primary computer, etc.

Memorial Service for James Konyu, Sept. 3rd

Candle---In-MemoryFrom the Konyus:

We are all still reeling from the sudden passing of James S. Konyu, our father and husband . There is a hole in our hearts that cannot be filled. The loss of a son, a brother, a father, a friend, a statistician, and a husband is hard to come to terms with, not something that we want to come to terms with. But we have not been given a choice in this,  as so often happens in this world. More importantly Dad, Jim, Mr K, Hunny Bunny; would not have wanted us to mourn him. He would have wanted us to celebrate him, and the life he shared with us. He would have want us to remember the impact that he made upon each of us. The drive that he instilled into us to better ourselves, improve our communities, and solidify our church and belief in God. Jim loved his Lord and was a very committed Christian man.  He led his life, with that love as his cornerstone. His community, the church, and his family were shown that love by his humble  examples.

We invite you to a memorial service in honor of the life and celebration of the great man, James Konyu, on September 3nd at 10am at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. If you have a story or memory that you would like to share, (one that would encourage the family) there will be an opportunity during the services. So please feel free to come with stories, jokes, experiences, or remembrances of the life you shared with Jim.

There will be a fellowship reception to follow the service.

The Konyu family will be hosting a open house from 1-4pm at their home:

In lieu of flowers please donation to the Union Gospel Mission. More information on donation can be found at: http://www.uniongospelmission.org/give/

Why Our Problems Are Insoluble by David Warren

treeExcerpted from David Warren Online:

As previously reported on this website, the world is falling apart. It has done so before, however, so we should not be unduly alarmed. Given only a few centuries of “dark ages” with physical insecurity and economic stasis, it is quite capable of reassembling itself. Patience is the key…

Civilizations are created by religion, and destroyed by politics. In the very word, “religion,” we find the principle of true social order — the voluntary direction of each human soul to a higher, encompassing, futurity. It is the unifying principle: men, animated by faith, gathered to serve something “higher” in the sense of transcending the conditions of human existence.

Politics consist in the appropriation of this organic authority by specific men, who put themselves above God, and naturally demand worship. (The vanity of tyrants is on public view.) The religion itself becomes a political tool, as today throughout the Islamic realm. In the West, the triumph of Man over the fear of God is more openly celebrated…

For the man in pursuit of absolute power dares not stop at anything. He dares not ever be humble and meek, nor dream of reconciling with his enemies. He must not concede; he must break them; he must be seen to break them. It is “triumph of the will.”

Religion, by contrast, is ever commanding us to stop; to study and to know our limitations. It builds upon humility, not wrath.

Justice Ginsburg Would Love to Overturn Heller Decision

one-eyed-justiceIn a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Supreme Court Justice Ginsburg said that she’d like to overturn the 2008 Heller decision in which the court affirmed the individual right to keep and bear arms. She called it “a very bad decision” that could be overruled. Justice Ginsburg has previously said that without the need for a militia, the Second Amendment is “outdated” because “its function has become obsolete.”

Justice Ginsburg also made negative comments about Presidential candidate Donald Trump, saying, “I can’t imagine what the country would be—with Donald Trump as our President.” She added that the possibility brought to mind her late husband whom she said would opine: “Now it’s time for us to move to New Zealand.”

These comments would appear to fly in the face of the Code of Conduct for United States Judges. Canon 5 of the code reads:

Canon 5: A Judge Should Refrain from Political Activity

(A) General Prohibitions. A judge should not:

(1) act as a leader or hold any office in a political organization;

(2) make speeches for a political organization or candidate, or publicly endorse or oppose a candidate for public office
; or…

The negative comments and praise for a coming liberal ascendancy, certainly seemed like a public endorsement for crooked Clinton.

flagJohn Mosby’s article is especially important for his conclusions as to what we should be doing as individuals.

“If we hope to see our own, common cultural values survive, we have to survive. That means not being afraid to move to the sound of the guns, and kill bad people. THAT, in turn, requires having the tactical and technical expertise to deal with unconventional, but professional level small-unit and individual tactical techniques, as well as—you knew it was coming—being physically fit enough to execute those skills ourselves, on demand, even when completely unexpected…
“You certainly can’t afford to get killed, because you sucked, and leave your family behind. If you’re a cop, and think your Academy training is adequate, you just saw a very graphic example of the fallacy of that (one of the slain officers was a three-tour veteran of the GWOT. One was a former 1st Ranger Battalion veteran from the 1980s. One was a former Marine. Are you better in a gunfight than those guys were?). If you’re an armed citizen, and haven’t had professional-level training with your weapon, and in tactical skills, you will be doing your community a greater service by moving AWAY from the sound of the guns than by moving towards the guns and getting killed or wounded…
“Go. Get training…”

I’ve held my tongue publicly, for a couple days, in the interest of not treading on the dead. As I’ve watched know-nothing news commentators, and politician police officials make statements that are demonstrably wrong on the nature of the attacks, however, I’ve decided to vent a little bit, in the interest of helping increase the […]

Founding Principle of the United States of America: Individual Rights

Our country was the first and only country in history that was founded on a brand new idea, the idea that people have rights. These rights are:

• the right to one’s own life (which includes that which one has worked for)
• the right to one’s own liberty (freedom to live the way you want provided you don’t hurt anyone else)
• the right to pursue one’s own happiness (not everyone else’s—yours)

When America was created, there was another new idea — the idea that the only legitimate purpose of government was to protect these rights, to make sure no person violated the rights of another. Government was not there to tell men what to do, or how to live their lives, or to take by force what each man has earned by his own efforts to give to another. Initiation of force was banned from human relationships. The only proper use of force was in retaliation against those who had initiated force or fraud against another. Force was only used as a means of defending rights through three branches of government: the police, the military and the courts. And that’s it.  The purpose of government was to only do that one thing and nothing else.  It was to protect individual rights.

The implementation of these two ideas created something unseen before on the face of the earth. For the first time men were free from other men. They were no longer subservient to a lord, master or king. They could live their lives and pursue their goals independently yet associate with each other voluntarily instead of by force. With individual rights as a guiding principle, all other freedoms fell into place: economic freedom, religious freedom, social freedom, freedom of association, contractual freedom, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom to bear arms and so on.  And look what happened. The United States of America became the happiest, wealthiest, most prosperous, most advanced nation on earth. It was also the most moral country because it recognized individual rights.

But the concept of rights has been corrupted over time.  Now people claim they have a “right” or are entitled to things like an education, medical care, food, housing and so on.  But if people have a “right” to something, it means that somebody has to provide it.  And when someone has to provide something against his will for someone else, there is only one word to describe it—slavery.  Yet if man’s survival is the objective, freedom is imperative.  Since man does not automatically know how to survive, he has to use his mind in order to figure out how to live.  He requires freedom so that he can think and act in accordance with the conclusions of his mind.  Therefore, a moral country provides the conditions necessary for this to happen and there is only one political system that does this–Capitalism.

Capitalism is a social system based on the concept of property rights.  Without property rights, you have no right to your own life.  If you can’t keep what you have worked for in order to support and enjoy your life, if you have no say in what happens to your property, you have no power over your decisions and actions, which means your rights to your life, your liberty and the pursuit of your happiness have been taken away.  Is this happening here in the United States?  Yes, it is.  Can it be saved?  Only if Americans discover our founding principle of individual rights and eliminate the government programs and laws that don’t protect them.  Here are just a few examples:

  • Re-distribution of wealth doesn’t protect rights.  The man who earns an honest living has his money taken against his will (theft) to be given to someone else.  His right to what he has worked for, that which supports his life, has been violated.
  • Socialized medicine doesn’t protect rights or life.  The doctors become slaves of the state that regulates how they should practice medicine and the patients no longer can choose the best treatments for the best prices.  Their right to use their own minds to decide what to do and to form contractual agreements with each other has been violated.
  • Social Security doesn’t protect rights.  The man who wants to invest for his future the way he chooses can’t, because his money is taken away from him to give to someone else.  His right to his property, to what he has earned, has been violated.
  • Regulations on businesses don’t protect rights. The businessman can’t hire or fire someone without going through a “process” dictated by the government.  His right to use his mind to make decisions regarding voluntary associations has been violated.  When oil companies aren’t allowed to drill for oil,  their property rights are violated.  Companies that have to follow government mandates lose the freedom to be innovative.  The right to think, form conclusions and take action with property has been violated.
  • Anti-trust laws don’t protect rights.  The businessman is treated as a criminal no matter what he does.  If his prices are too high, too low or the same as his competitors, he can be prosecuted at the whim of some bureaucrat.  His right to his property (to charge the price he wants in order to sell it) has been violated.
  • Bail-outs and subsidies don’t protect rights. The government decides who succeeds and who fails instead of citizens who trade with each other.  Taxpayers pay to support businesses by force through their tax dollars and become poorer because of it.  The right to freedom of association and property has been violated.
  • Welfare programs don’t protect rights.  The person who wants to give money to a charity of his choice has his money confiscated for government programs that he may or may not support.  His right to use his property (his money) the way he wants has been violated.
  • Bans on consumption of certain foods don’t protect rights.  The right to one’s own body is a property right and this is violated.
  • Taxation without representation doesn’t protect rights.  Money is stolen from one group of men to give to another.  Re-distribution of other people’s money is a direct violation of their property rights.

Any violation of our rights completely contradicts the ideas of our Founding Fathers who were very serious about individual freedom.  On February 25, 2011 Yaron Brook gave a rousing speech at the Tea Party Patriots Summit in Arizona where he pointed this out about the Founding Fathers: “They didn’t say, ‘We just want a little bit less taxes, please, King George.’ They didn’t say, ‘Give us some liberty, please, King George.’ They changed the world because they asked a fundamental question. And the question they asked is, ‘Who does your life – does my life – belong to?’ That’s a question that people had never asked, because it was always obvious: your life belongs to the state, to the king, to some emperor, to somebody else – and it’s your job to do his bidding. The Founders of this country said ‘No: sovereignty belongs with the individual. My life is mine. Your life is yours. And nobody can take that away – not a king; but not even a majority!”

If we want to restore freedom to our country, we must re-discover our roots. Our Founding Fathers were so committed to their revolutionary ideas that they were willing to put their lives on the line for the document that laid the moral foundation for the United States of America—the Declaration of Independence.  We need to be willing to do the same.  We need to be willing to stand up and say: “My life belongs to me, not to the government, not to the state, not to King George, not to a welfare program, but…to me!”  We need to believe in that principle and commit to that principle, the principle of individual rights.

“I want you to look at the birth of a miracle: the United States of America. If it is ever proper for men to kneel, we should kneel when we read the Declaration of Independence.  The concept of individual rights is so prodigious a feat of political thinking that few men grasp it fully – and 200 years have not been enough for other countries to understand it.” — Ayn Rand

John Mosby classes in Salem, OR in August

flagJohn Mosby is a firearms trainer with a very good reputation. He also does some work with Sam Culper from Forward Observer (who was at our expo). He has a website at https://mountainguerrilla.wordpress.com/  He is teaching several classes in Salem, OR in August. Yes, Salem is 4+ hours away, but it may well be worth it.

5-7 AUG 2016 Clandestine Carry Pistol (this is Fri-Sun)

Focused on the use of the pistol for the underground, this course focuses on basic gun-handling under combative conditions, as well as the necessary mental and combative skills needed to protect the gun, and fight your way to the gun.

Two days of this course are straight range time, before moving into gym work with combatives and FoF iterations. This is an extremely physically demanding course, and involves violent physical contact with other students. If you leave without cuts, scrapes, and bruises, I’ll be surprised.

This class requires an effective carry pistol and a concealed carry holster for that pistol. It also requires a minimum of two spare magazines, and magazine pouches to carry those magazines. A mouthguard and athletic cup for men are HIGHLY recommended. For FoF iterations, a long-sleeved sweatshirt are recommended.

8-9 AUG 2016 Tactical Combat Casualty Care (this is Mon-Tue)

This two-day class covers the Care Under Fire and Tactical Field Care phases of Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TC3), as well as CASEVAC and long-term care under austere conditions. I’m not a medic, although I’ve taught TC3 for a long time, so I had an 18D Special Forces Medical NCO collaborate with me on the development of the POI, and provide a critical look at the POI before adopting it.

This course incorporates lecture and demonstration, as well as extensive hands-on practical exercises.

Required equipment includes whatever your basic fighting load and weapon, as well as an IFAK/BOK (Individual First Aid Kit/Blow-Out Kit). The IFAK should include—minimally—an appropriately sized nasopharyngeal airway device (FR28 is the normal size for the typical adult), chest seals, battlefield dressing, compressed gauze, and an appropriate combat tourniquet.

11 AUG 2016 Auxiliary and Support Operations Course (this is the following Thursday)

No description is available for this class, but see his discussion of the auxiliary here: https://mountainguerrilla.wordpress.com/2012/09/28/organization-and-development-of-the-auxiliary/

12-14 AUG 2016 Combat Rifle Fundamentals (this is Fri-Sun)

This is a beginner to novice level class on how to run your gun effectively under tactical field conditions. Beginning with basic square range work out to 200+ meters, it focuses on the fundamentals of marksmanship and effective gun-handling as an individual, before moving into working with a partner.

This class requires a fighting rifle, a minimum of four magazines (for magazine fed rifles), and some method of carrying those magazines effectively.

For class details, and to register for these classes, contact HH6 at Mosbyhh6@hushmail.com

Appleseed Project, Waitsburg, WA, Aug. 27th & 28th

logo-project-appleseedThere will be an Appleseed rifle marksmanship training in Waitsburg, WA on August 27th and 28th. Information and registration through this link: http://appleseedinfo.org/search-states-location.php?locationid=322&id_event=4544

For more information about the Appleseed project go to appleseedinfo.org

“Can you hit a target at 25 yards? How about at 500 yards? Whether you are new to the shooting sports or a seasoned shooter Appleseed will be able to teach you a thing or two.

“For the new shooter we can teach you to use your rifle safely and also be able to hit your target. For the seasoned shooter we can teach you to shoot more accurately – even out to 500 yards.

“Project Appleseed can help transform you from a man with a rifle into a Rifleman. A Rifleman is more than a man (or woman) with a rifle. A Rifleman understands that owning and mastering a rifle is part of his heritage as an American. And he knows why: This is a nation founded by Riflemen — men and women skilled in the use of arms.

“Those skills served the colonists well when they stood up to the British on April 19, 1775, at Lexington and Concord, and routed the British forces that tried to seize the colonists’ arms. They did it with grit, with determination, and with superior skill in marksmanship. They pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor to the task. And they didn’t stop until they had won. Throughout history, Riflemen have embodied personal responsibility and been pillars of their communities, characteristics that are becoming ever more rare in our nation.

“At Project Appleseed, we want to return America to being a nation of Riflemen. And we want you to join us.”
