This discussion is focused on a future potential scenario when operators must use tactics, techniques, and procedures, which might not be within current FCC regulations. AmRRON policy is clear that all its members operate on the airwaves in a lawful manner. We do not use encryption or otherwise intentionally obscure transmissions over the amateur radio bands. If you see it, report it: johnjacob at amrron dot com. It would be easy, and conceivable, for a malicious actor to ‘spoof’ a ham radio operator’s callsign and transmit illegally in order to bring scrutiny against an individual ham operator, whatever the motive might be. This is why we emphasize and practice authentication measures.

PRACTICE USING OTPs (instructions and resources linked below in this posting)
Use the ‘STAR‘ One Time Pad to decrypt the numbers read by Lady Liberty in the radio show.
Use the Conversion Chart (below) to convert the decrypted numbers into letters, revealing the secret message.
The secret message that you will decode IS the password to open the 2022 OTP Christmas Red Ryder Contest Page. Follow the instructions! You’ll have SIX WHOLE DAYS to work on decrypting the secret message and getting your entry submitted. Entries must be received by Saturday, December 17th, midnight (Pacific Time).
Tune in to the John Jacob Schmidt show (Sunday, December 18th) on Radio Free Redoubt to see if you’re one of the winners!
THIS YEAR’S CHRISTMAS ONE TIME PAD (OTP) CONTEST INVOLVES LETTERS AND AT LEAST ONE SPECIAL CHARACTER.
(Scroll down in this posting for practice exercises and One Time Pad encryption resources.)
The 2022 One Time Pad, titled ‘STAR‘, is required to decrypt this year’s secret message. Save it in a secret place!
Remember, you have to ADD to decode the message.
CONVERSION TABLE YOU WILL NEED FOR THIS YEAR’S CONTEST
Once you correctly add the secret message numbers to the STAR One Time Pad, you will have a set of numbers that you will then need to convert into a message that you can read. You will need the Conversion Table below to convert those numbers to readable characters.
(the conversion table is always the same)
PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE!
===== GREAT PRACTICE RESOURCES BELOW =====
The resources below are for practice only, and are separate from the specific 2021 contest instructions at the top of this posting.
Here’s another practice exercise that should help you to get ready!
NOTE: Numbers will not be used in this year’s decoded message, but this practice exercise shows how numbers have been included in previous contests.
Up until this point we have converted letters into numbers and then converted the numbers back to letters using the one time pads and conversion tables. There are times when you will need to send or receive numbers also. Exact numbers are important parts of the message. Times, weights, telephone numbers need to be exact. You can’t guess what the sender probably meant when it comes to numbers. Our conversion table doesn’t even have numbers on it. How do we send numbers accurately?
Numbers are sent by repeating them three times. For example if you wanted to send “123” you would send your message as “111222333” If you were to receive a message of “111222333” you would know that it was meant to be “123”.
In order to prevent confusion and errors, number strings are preceded and ended with the “figure” character which is the number 90 on the conversion table. If you wanted to encode “123” you would use the following: “9011122233390” The “90” alerts you to the fact that numbers/figures are next and when you see the other “90” you know that the numbers/figures are ending.
Let’s practice a short message by using the below One Time Pad Census and the Conversion Table. You receive the following encoded message:
93786 00207 57770 04719 08239 92214
Remember that you add to decode and you don’t carry to the next place. (6+7=3 not 13)
The following podcast comes from Radio Free Redoubt.
AmRRON POLICY: AmRRON OPERATIONS ARE LEGAL AND LAWFUL, and when using Amateur Radio bands, FCC rules apply.
We don’t use encryption over radio. There’s no need to. There’s no need to use tactical callsigns. But we do practice with it using the internet and other platforms where it’s perfectly legal.
More on authentication
Authentication using PGP key signatures for files
Tactical Callsigns (COMSEC/PERSEC/OPSEC); the alternative to using FCC callsigns when protecting your identity is necessary.
‘Modding’ your radio (aka. Open banding, opening up, MARS modding, your radio to operate outside amateur radio bands)
THE TEN-LETTER WORD AUTHENTICATION
The following is a visual of the one-way authentication example as used in the podcast:
The image below (Figure 2) is an example of a ‘Dryad’, found in military CEOIs, and was used for two-way authentication and enciphering numbers. There is VERY little information available open source (on the internet) discussing or explaining most components of a CEOI. However, American Partisan has a series of articles for the Raspberry Pi enthusiasts, for generating tactical callsigns, dryads, and more. Today, authentication and encryption is loaded into modern military radios, and these soldier comms skills are (were) a dying art. We’re bringing them back.
Instructions on using the dryad will not be covered here, but will be covered in the near future.
The following two links cover NCScout’s postings at AmericanPartisan… an excellent resource for modern patriots, including radio operators.
Note, it is a script for generating dryads, callsigns, etc. on a Raspberry Pi, for those of you savvy with using R-Pi.
With all the saber rattling recently, tensions are high. AmRRON has published an article with links to various nuclear survival articles as well as some short blurbs about current events. It also links to a Radio Free Redoubt podcast which covers the same.
The following resources are from Episode 22-35 of the Radio Free Redoubt weekly podcast, covering the growing nuclear war threat (Segment 2), and tools and resources for your situational awareness and increased survivability. Nuclear attacks are VERY survivable for the majority of Americans, if you are informed.
Segment 2 (Current events and Indicators) begins at approx. 18:00 minute mark
Segment 3 (Effects and Survivability resources) begins at 31:00

OCTOBER 8, 2022 Video: Russia says truck bomb caused Crimea bridge explosion; limited traffic resumes The speaker of Crimea’s Kremlin-backed regional parliament immediately accused Ukraine of being behind the explosion, though Moscow didn’t apportion blame. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly threatened to strike the bridge and some lauded the destruction. Kyiv stopped short of claiming responsibility, though officials heavily hinted they were behind the attack.
OCTOBER 9, 2022 Putin ‘in a corner’ with options narrowing
US President Joe Biden admitted this week that American diplomats still did not know how Russian President Vladimir Putin could bring an end to his faltering war in Ukraine and save face. Western analysts see no good options.
OCTOBER 7, 2022 Biden: Nuclear ‘Armageddon’ risk highest since ’62 crisis (Is he trying to provoke?)
President Joe Biden said Thursday that the risk of nuclear “Armageddon” is at the highest level since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, as Russian officials speak of the possibility of using tactical nuclear weapons after suffering massive setbacks in the eight-month invasion of Ukraine.
Speaking at a fundraiser for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, Biden said Russian President Vladimir Putin was “a guy I know fairly well” and the Russian leader was “not joking when he talks about the use of tactical nuclear weapons or biological or chemical weapons.” OCTOBER 9, 2022 Pompeo rips Biden’s ‘reckless’ Armageddon remark: ‘One of the greatest foreign policy failures’

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT? HERE ARE THE RESOURCES I DISCUSSED IN THE PODCAST:
The ‘Good News About Nuclear Destruction’ is that if all Americans were trained again in the Civil Defense basics of what to do and not do if nuclear weapons were ever unleashed again, we could instantly make all nukes 90% less lethal. Ideally, while I’d like to see a world free of nuclear weapons someday, in the meantime we should all embrace rejuvenating public Civil Defense to greatly minimize their lethality.”
It can be fatal if you don’t do anything. See the effects from ‘Nuclear Blasts Part-2′ of Dr. Bones’ article:
Effects On Humans Of Various Amounts of Absorbed Radiation An acute radiation dose (one received over a short period of time) is the most likely to cause damage. Below is a list of the effects on humans corresponding to the amount of radiation absorbed. For comparison, assume that you absorb about 0.6 RADs per year from natural or household sources. These are the effects of different degrees of acute radiation exposure on humans: – 30-70 RADS: Mild headache or nausea within several hours of exposure. Full recovery is expected. – 70-150 RADS: Mild nausea and vomiting in a third of patients. Decreased wound healing and increased susceptibility to infection. Full recovery is expected. – 150-300 RADS: Moderate nausea and vomiting in a majority of patients. Fatigue and weakness in half of victims. Infection and/or spontaneous bleeding may occur due to a weakened immune system. Medical care will be required for many, especially those with burns or wounds. Occasional deaths at 300 RADS exposure may occur. – 300-500 RADS: Moderate nausea and vomiting, fatigue, and weakness in most patients. Diarrheal stools, dehydration, loss of appetite, skin breakdown, and infection will be common. Hair loss is visible in most over time. At the high end of exposure, expect a 50% death rate. – Over 500 RADS: Spontaneous bleeding, fever, stomach and intestinal ulcers, bloody diarrhea, dehydration, low blood pressure, infections, and hair loss is anticipated in almost all patients. Death rates approach 100%. The effects related to exposure may occur over time, even if the dose was received in a very short time. Hair loss, for example, will become apparent at 10-14 days. Deaths may occur weeks after the exposure.
See how rapidly the radiation decays! If you can hunker down and shelter for 48 to 72 hours, nuclear fallout can be VERY survivable.

The following information was graciously provided by WA State Rep. Matt Shea. The compilation of invaluable training and education resources stemmed from an on-stage panel we were in, fielding questions from the audience. One question came up asking what we can do to reach our youth. This list is not just for youth, as you can see. While some of them are oriented toward bringing up the next generation in the truth of our blessed heritage, many/most are also critical resources for ALL AMERICANS.
The following list is yet another example of Rep. Shea’s leadership and commitment to make this and the next generation one which relearns our history and heritage, and restores our great constitutional republic in a God-honoring way, so He may restore to us the blessings of liberty.
John Jacob Schmidt from Radio Free Redoubt interviews Simon Roche from Suidlanders in the April 2017 episode. Suidlanders is the world’s largest non-government civil defense group formed under the auspices on international humanitarian law as stated in the Geneva conventions. Suidlanders is an emergency plan initiated for the protection of non-combatant civilian Afrikaners in the event of a civil war in South Africa. Their story is of interest to anyone interested in preparedness or any who may fear a civil war coming in their own county. A couple of members of Suidlanders are currently speaking at venues across the United States in order to raise awareness of the issues facing South Africa. You can read more about Suidlanders at their website.
